World Day Against the Death Penalty is observed annually on 10 October. During this period, human rights organisations, political institutions and public figures around the world intensify discussions on the abolition of the death penalty, support those affected and advocate for a more humane justice system.

The hearings, organised at the initiative of Mikita Semianenka from the Latushka Coalition and For Freedom Movement faction, will enable the Coordination Council to contribute to this discussion in a timely manner, raise international awareness of the situation in Belarus and formulate its own position based on expert analysis.

Invited experts:

  • Andrei Paluda, coordinator of the campaign “Human Rights Defenders Against the Death Penalty in Belarus”.
  • Valiantsin Stefanovic, human rights defender at Viasna, former Vice-President of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), and expert of the campaign “Human Rights Defenders Against the Death Penalty in Belarus”.

Following the hearings, a vote will be held on the draft resolution “On the Unconditional and Immediate Abolition of the Death Penalty in Belarus”, initiated by the Latushka Coalition and For Freedom Movement faction.
